Alpha 1 Rule
We reward posterior right Alpha 1 going up to support internal focus (Aftanas & Golocheikine 2001, Brandmeyer & Delorme 2016, Braboszcz et al. 2017). Alpha 1 functions to block out the outside world by efficiently gating sensory information not pertaining to the practice. In Anapana, we want to disengage from distracting sensory input and keep our attention focused single-pointedly on the inbreath and outbreath. By rewarding Alpha 1, we are enhancing an internalized attention free of distractions.
Alpha 1 Weights
Level 1 and 2 meditators are assigned a rule weight of +1, while Level 3 and 4 meditators are assigned a rule weight of +2. Studies have shown experienced Anapana practitioners have further low-Alpha power increases due to the trait benefits of the practice (Kakumanu et al. 2018).
